The reason why aragonite forms is that the colloidal substance of aragonite is precipitated at low temperatureis a kind of regenerated filling mineral. In other words, the basalt lava solidifies first,then aragonite is gradually deposited into the porescracks. In particular, basalt with more ironmagnesium minerals contains aragonite in its geodes. Penghu’s aragonite is mainly formed in Fenggui, Shili, Houliao, Tongliang, Hejie, Chixi, Waian, Wangan Islet, JiangjiyuenyuDongjiyu. Among them, the aragonite formed in Wangan IsletJiangjiyuenyu is of the best quality, with groups of concentric circles, which are called “aragonite eyes”. This aragonite-bearing basalt specimen was collected from Tongliang of Paisha Township.
當多孔狀玄武岩浸入海水或地下水中時,各種碳酸鹽類的礦物,會進入到岩層的氣孔或裂隙中,然後開始沉澱並充滿於孔隙中。一些碳酸鈣類的礦物以霰石、方解石為主,另外還有鎂、鐵、錳等碳酸鹽,以及褐鐵礦、菱鐵礦、菱鎂礦、蛋白石、石英等礦物,這些都是文石組成的主要材料。雖然文石的硬度較低,耐酸鹼的能力也較差,不過因為相當罕見,同時又具有美麗的花紋,經過琢磨後可呈現同心圓狀或不規則狀的線紋,顏色鮮艷,花紋獨特,加工製成各種飾物,甚為高雅大方,極受人們喜愛。文石生成的原因,是由文石成分的膠狀物質,在低溫之下所沉澱而成,屬於再生填充礦物,也就是說文石的生成,是在玄武岩岩漿凝固之後,才逐漸沉積在氣孔或裂隙之中。尤其含鐵、鎂礦物較多的玄武岩,晶洞中多含有文石。澎湖文石的產地主要有風櫃、嵵裡、後寮、通梁、合界、池西、外垵、望安島、將軍澳嶼及東吉嶼等地,其中以望安島和將軍澳嶼所產之文石品質最佳,具有多組同心圓構成的圓圈,稱為「文石眼」。這個含霰石玄武岩標本採集自白沙鄉的通梁。
